In the Limburg-Weilburg region of Hesse Germany a grass snake was formerly known as the Unke.
It is a harmless snake which should bring luck and blessing even with its presence. This type of snake has two yellow spots on its neck, which were also regarded as the crown of the snake. The possession of this crown is supposed to bring life-long happiness and increase the property. Even the Vikings recognized the value of this snake and decorated their houses with wooden carved snakes.
